Virtual Tour Planning & Reflections (questions)

Grade level: 4th-6th grade
Standard 4 (Contextualizing): Students will find meaning in works of art through settings and other modes of learning. Objective 1 Align works of art according to history, geography, and personal experience.
Use visual characteristics to group artworks into historical, social, and cultural contexts; e.g., cubist view of the Egyptians, tenebrism of the Baroque.

Describe why you chose to do a virtual tour on this topic.
I feel that art is all around us. To really capture this phrase kids need to be able to see the world around them. A class cannot take a field trip all around the world; thus, a virtual tour will help them see real life images, compare & contrast settings and works of art. In addition, I feel that a virtual tour enhances the images presented, such as really traveling to France and seeing the palace.
Include a description of how the representation of this content will assist the students to better understand.
First, I made sure to have a picture to represent every art form I am talking about. I could always just explain to the students what characteristics fall under expressionism, but it will not stay in the long-term memory of the child until the child sees an image that can be linked to the definition of it. Also, for impressionism, a representation of the size is better represented when the student is actually seeing the building and measuring it to scale. Furthermore, I connect a location to the history and setting of the art, which also connects to the culture of the art. To add on to this, in my last box I have a link of an article for the students to read. This helps them be inquirers, and it helps them relate the content of social influences on the art movement. Overall, I made sure to give a variety of sources for the students to observe and search. This will enable them to have a better representation of the art.
