Virtual Tour Reflection

Write a paragraph reflecting on what you think the upsides and downsides are for implementing a virtual tour in an elementary education classroom.

Virtual tour in a classroom is a great visual for any student. It is not only implementing pedagogy, but it also serves as a multi-modal form of teaching. It will be very difficult to try to travel all over Europe to see all the art and architecture there. Thus, a virtual tour helps students apply what they are learning to these locations around the world-and they will have reference of these locations after being oriented around Europe through a virtual tour.

The downsides of a virtual tour is the technology aspect of it. It is time consuming, and not a lesson plan that can be put together so easily. It takes a lot of planning and constructing and experimenting to get the right gadgets and placemarks where you need them to be. Another downfall could be that it does not give too much room for student participation. The activities are more for each individual student to experiment with individually. This may lead to another conflict of trying to get enough computers for every child. Many schools do not have these resources. Additionally, virtual tours might be too distracting for the younger grades. The younger students might be more enthused at how the earth is moving and then all of a sudden you see a house, rather than the actual content you are trying to teach. They will have to be managed and taught how to respond to this lesson.
