Week 3 Assessment-Krysta & Mariah

Mariah and I discussed Modules 26 and 29 as follows:
1-pg 470
Summative: portfolio, quizzes, tests, papers, standardized tests
Formative: homework, short quiz, demonstration, learning log, simulation (putting self in real
life situation)

We talked about how formative assessment can be used as a summative assessments. One example is a short quiz on a certain topic can prepare students for an extended quiz or test. Overall, tests, quizzes, and hw can be interchangeable between formative and summative assessments.

2-pg 526-527
Standardized achievement assessment can be summarized as assessing current knowledge, whereas standardizes aptitute assessment can be summarized as an assessment based on academic and non academic material, strengths and weaknessess, admission and selection purpose (college, honors classes, etc).

Criterion-referenced tests can be Standardized achievement assessment, which is based on how well the students reach a goal.
Norm-referenced tests can be standardized achievement and/or aptitude assessments. This is based on grading on a curve, where grades depend on other students' performance.

3-After reading all the responses from the teachers Mariah and I realized that there are many other factors that could have affected the scores of the test, such as the shooting that happened during that week of the test, disabled students not being accomodated, etc. Thus, we came to the conclusion that the principal should not be that concerned because you look at a test for what it is supposed to be-validity and students' performance or progress (according to us and what we read).

4- As a teacher, Mariah and I both agreed that we will need to view assessments as a valuable tool for teaching. Nonetheless, teachers need to be careful with how they interpret tests scores and how they use assessments. Assessments that are misused do not help students who are already struggling in school. Thus, assessments misused are not helping students progress.

Parent:
-be informed
-know where grades are coming from and how the scores are interpreted by the teacher
-understand that bad grades does not mean failure, it is just part of the learning process.
